How Much Does an eCommerce Website Cost in India?

Having built 120+ eCommerce stores for jewelry and fashion brands in India, the honest answer is: "it depends on what you actually need," but most owners never get a straight breakdown of where the cost goes. Here it is.

The three real cost components

Shopify/SaaS vs. custom-built

Shopify and similar SaaS platforms get you live fastest, with predictable monthly costs, but those costs (platform + apps) recur forever and typically add up to be more expensive over 2-3 years than a custom build. A custom-built store (WordPress/WooCommerce or a plain PHP/MySQL build) has a higher upfront cost and takes longer to launch, but has no recurring platform fee and gives full control over design and functionality — a better fit once your product catalog and payment needs are clear and stable.

What changes the price

Within either approach, price moves based on: number of products and categories, whether variants (size/color) are involved, whether you need custom features (subscriptions, bulk/wholesale pricing, multi-currency for exports), and how much design customization vs. a ready template is used. A single-category store with 50 products is a very different job from a multi-category catalog with 1,000+ SKUs.

What's usually quoted separately

Product photography, individual product copywriting, and initial catalog data-entry are typically scoped separately from the website build itself, since the effort scales directly with the number of products — not something a flat website quote can absorb.

Don't skip the part after launch

The most common mistake: spending the entire budget on the build and having nothing left for SEO or ads. A store with zero visitors doesn't sell, regardless of how well it's built. Budgeting even a modest amount for ongoing SEO or Google Ads from day one changes outcomes dramatically. FAQ

Is Shopify or a custom-built store better for a small Indian brand?

Shopify is faster to launch and easier to maintain but comes with recurring subscription and app costs. A custom-built store (WordPress/WooCommerce or plain PHP) has a higher upfront cost but lower recurring fees and more control — a better fit once you know your product-catalog and payment needs clearly.

What ongoing costs does an eCommerce store have after launch?

Hosting/domain renewal, payment gateway transaction fees (typically 2 percent or so per transaction), any SaaS platform subscription if applicable, and marketing spend (SEO or ads) to actually drive traffic to the store.

Does the website cost include product photography?

Usually not — product photography, copywriting for each listing, and initial inventory/catalog setup are typically quoted separately from the website build itself, since the scope varies enormously by number of products.
