How to Hire a Shopify Developer in 2026: Skills, 20 Questions and Red Flags

Laptop showing an online store with a shopping cart: how to hire a Shopify developer guide

Hiring a Shopify developer looks easy. Marketplaces list thousands of them, agencies promise everything and every second freelancer calls themselves a "Shopify expert". The hard part is telling the difference between someone who can install a theme and someone who can build a store that loads fast, ranks, tracks sales correctly and is still easy to run a year later.

I have built and fixed Shopify stores for jewellery and fashion brands since 2020, and I see the result of bad hires every month: stores with twenty apps, broken tracking, lost rankings after a migration, and owners who cannot change a banner without paying someone. This guide is what I would tell a friend before they hire anyone, including me.

Quick answer: to hire a good Shopify developer, (1) write a one-page brief with your goals, products, markets and must-have features, (2) decide whether you need a developer, an expert or an agency, (3) shortlist three to five people with live Shopify stores you can open yourself, (4) ask the 20 questions below, (5) give a small paid test task, and (6) sign a written scope that says you own the store, theme and code, with collaborator access only. Judge them on live work and clear answers, not on badges or the lowest quote.

Shopify developer vs Shopify expert vs Shopify agency

These titles are used loosely, so it helps to define them by what the person actually does.

For most small and mid-sized brands, the best value is one experienced developer who can also advise: you get decisions and code from the same person, with nobody in between. My Shopify developer and expert service is built around exactly that.

Step 1: know what kind of Shopify work you need

"I need a Shopify developer" can mean very different jobs. Name yours first, because the right person and the right quote depend on it.

JobWhat it involvesWho fits
New store setupPlan, theme, branding, collections, products, payments, shipping, taxes, apps, tracking, launchShopify expert or experienced developer
Theme customisationChanging layouts, new sections and blocks, product page features, speed fixesTheme developer comfortable with Liquid and OS 2.0
Custom themeA theme built for your brand from scratchSenior theme developer, often with a designer
MigrationMoving products, customers, orders, content and URLs from WooCommerce, Wix, Magento or a custom siteDeveloper with SEO and data migration experience
Checkout and rulesShopify Functions for discounts, shipping and payments, checkout UI extensions, post-purchaseDeveloper who builds apps and extensions
Custom app or integrationERP, CRM, warehouse, WhatsApp or marketplace sync through the Admin APIApp developer
Headless buildHydrogen or another framework on top of Shopify for full front-end controlSenior developer; only worth it at scale
Ongoing supportFixes, landing pages, campaigns, app reviews, small features each monthA developer you trust, on a support plan

If you are starting from zero, read my Shopify store setup checklist before you write the brief. It will show you which decisions you can make yourself and which ones need help.

Step 2: write a one-page brief

A clear brief gets you better quotes, faster, and makes candidates easier to compare. It does not need to be technical. Include:

  1. Your business: what you sell, to whom, in which countries, and roughly how many products and variants.
  2. Your goal: launch, redesign, faster pages, more conversions, a migration, selling abroad.
  3. Stores you like: two or three links, and what you like about each.
  4. Must-have features: COD, size charts, product bundles, wholesale pricing, subscriptions, reviews, WhatsApp, multi-currency.
  5. Existing setup: current platform, theme, apps, payment gateway, shipping partner, and any tracking or ad accounts.
  6. What you will provide: product data, photos, logo, copy, policies, and when they will be ready.
  7. Timeline: a target launch date and any fixed deadline such as a festival sale.

Do not hide your constraints. A good developer will tell you what is realistic for your timeline and help you cut scope rather than promise everything.

Step 3: where to find Shopify developers

Step 4: check the portfolio properly

Screenshots prove nothing. Ask for live store links and check them yourself on your own phone. Here is a five-minute test anyone can run:

  1. Open the store on mobile data. Does the home page appear quickly, or do you stare at a blank screen and pop-ups?
  2. Open a collection and a product. Are filters usable? Are photos sharp but fast? Is the price, delivery estimate and return policy easy to find?
  3. Add to cart and start checkout. Is the path short and obvious? (Do not complete payment.)
  4. Run the URL through PageSpeed Insights. Look at the Core Web Vitals field data for real users, not only the lab score.
  5. Search Google for the brand plus a product type. Do the collection and product pages show with clean titles?

Then ask exactly what the developer did on each store. "Built it end to end", "changed the product page" and "installed a theme" are very different answers. Here are seven live Shopify stores I have built, so you can try the test on my work too:

Screenshots and more eCommerce work are on the portfolio page.

Step 5: the skills a Shopify developer needs in 2026

Shopify has changed a lot in the last two years. A developer whose knowledge stopped in 2023 can still build a pretty home page, but will struggle with the parts that matter now. Check for these:

Not every job needs every skill. A theme fix does not need Markets experience. But anyone you hire for a full build should be able to talk comfortably about most of this list.

Step 6: 20 questions to ask before you hire

Send these in writing or ask them on a call. You are not looking for perfect jargon; you are looking for specific, honest answers.

  1. Can you show me three live Shopify stores you built, and tell me exactly what you did on each?
  2. Which Online Store 2.0 theme would you start from for my store, and why that one?
  3. How do you build sections and blocks so I can edit them in the theme editor myself?
  4. Which apps would you remove from my store, and what would replace them?
  5. How do you handle discount, shipping or payment rules now that Shopify Scripts no longer run?
  6. How do you set up tracking on the Thank you page after the checkout extensibility upgrade?
  7. How do you test speed, and on which devices?
  8. How would you structure my collections for SEO?
  9. What happens to my old URLs if we migrate or rename products?
  10. Do you use Shopify CLI and GitHub for theme changes, and will I get the code?
  11. Will you work on an unpublished theme so my live store keeps selling?
  12. Which permissions do you need through a collaborator account?
  13. How do you set up payments, COD and shipping for my market?
  14. Have you set up Shopify Markets for selling in more than one country?
  15. How do you make product data readable for AI assistants and Google Shopping?
  16. What do you need from me, and by when, to hit the timeline?
  17. How do you report progress, and how often?
  18. What exactly is included in the quote, and what would cost extra?
  19. What support do I get after launch, and for how long?
  20. If something breaks after launch, how quickly do you respond?

Good candidates answer with examples from real stores and tell you when something is not worth doing. Weak candidates answer every question with "yes, no problem".

Red flags to walk away from

Hiring a Shopify developer in India vs abroad

Many brands in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and the UAE hire Shopify developers in India, and many Indian brands look abroad for big agencies. Both work when you hire on evidence. Here is what actually differs.

FactorHiring in IndiaHiring locally in the USA, UK or Canada
CostUsually lower for the same level of skillUsually higher, especially agencies
Time zonesWork moves forward overnight for Western clients; overlap is early morning or eveningSame working hours
CommunicationVaries; insist on written daily updates in clear EnglishUsually easier live calls
Indian market knowledgeStrong on COD, UPI, GST, Shiprocket and Indian buyer behaviourLimited if you sell in India
Contracts and paymentUse a clear written scope, milestone payments and international payment methodsLocal contracts and invoicing

The quality range is wide everywhere. A careful hire in India can outperform a local agency, and a careless hire anywhere will cost you more than it saved. The steps in this guide work in any country.

Step 7: give a small paid test task

For a full build or long-term support, start with a small, paid task before the big contract. Good test tasks take a few hours to a couple of days:

Judge the result, the communication and whether they explained what they did. That tells you more than any interview.

Step 8: agree a written scope and contract

Before work starts, get these points in writing:

What to do in the first 30 days after launch

Hiring does not end at launch. The first month shows whether the store and the developer were right.

Shopify store checklist for AI search

Shoppers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Google's AI Mode what to buy. With Agentic Storefronts, Shopify can list eligible products in those assistants through Shopify Catalog. The assistants can only recommend what they understand, so ask your developer to cover these basics:

Summary

Hire on evidence. Write a short brief, decide whether you need a developer or an expert, check live stores on your own phone, ask specific questions about 2026 Shopify (Functions, checkout extensibility, AI search), start with a small paid task, and sign a written scope that keeps the store in your name. If you would like me to look at your store or idea, the Shopify developer service page explains how I work, and the free audit costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hire a Shopify developer?

Write a one-page brief, decide whether you need a developer, an expert or an agency, shortlist three to five people with live Shopify stores you can open yourself, ask specific questions about your project, give a small paid test task, and sign a written scope that keeps the store in your account with collaborator access only.

What is the difference between a Shopify expert and a Shopify developer?

A Shopify developer writes and changes code: themes, apps, integrations and checkout rules. A Shopify expert also advises on the plan, theme, apps, payments, markets and SEO structure. For small and mid-sized stores, one person who does both is usually the best value.

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?

It depends on the job: a setup on a premium theme, a custom theme, a migration and ongoing support are priced very differently, and rates vary by experience and country. I quote every project individually after a free audit; message me on WhatsApp for a quote.

Is it safe to hire a Shopify developer from India?

Yes, if you hire on evidence: live store links, specific answers, a small paid test task and a written scope. Keep the store in your own account and give access only through a collaborator account, which you can remove at any time.

Should I give my Shopify developer my login?

No. Use a collaborator account. You generate a request code in your Shopify admin, the developer sends a request, and you approve only the permissions the job needs. Access expires automatically if the collaborator does not log in for 90 days, and you can remove it at any time.

How long does it take a Shopify developer to build a store?

A typical new store launches in two to four weeks once product data, photos and brand assets are ready. A theme fix or speed pass takes days; a migration or a custom theme takes longer depending on catalogue size and features.

Do I need a Shopify Plus developer?

Only if you are on Shopify Plus or need Plus-only features such as advanced checkout customisation, B2B at scale or multiple expansion stores. Most small and mid-sized brands are well served by a developer who knows Online Store 2.0, Functions and checkout extensibility.

What should a Shopify developer know in 2026?

Liquid and Online Store 2.0 sections and blocks, Shopify CLI and Git, Shopify Functions (Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026), checkout and customer accounts extensibility, metafields and metaobjects, performance, SEO and AI-search readiness, Shopify Markets, and the payment and shipping setup for your market.

Can a Shopify developer help with SEO?

A good one can handle technical and on-page SEO: canonical URLs, collection structure, titles, structured data, redirects, speed and Merchant Center. Content strategy and link building are separate skills, so check whether the developer also does SEO or works with someone who does.

Freelancer or agency: which is better for Shopify?

A skilled freelancer is usually better value for small and mid-sized stores because you talk directly to the person doing the work. An agency makes sense for large or Shopify Plus stores that need designers, developers and marketers working at the same time.
