Selling on Amazon looks simple from the outside — list a product, wait for orders — but the sellers who actually make money treat it as its own discipline. Here's what "Amazon marketplace management" really covers, and where most listings quietly lose sales.
The same issues show up repeatedly on underperforming listings: weak backend search terms that miss how buyers actually phrase searches, bullet points that describe features instead of answering "why should I buy this," too few or low-quality images, a low review count or rating, and pricing/inventory problems that push a listing out of the Buy Box entirely. A proper listing audit usually finds two or three of these at once.
Amazon captures buyers who are already in "ready to purchase" mode and searching the marketplace directly — high intent, but Amazon owns the customer relationship and takes a referral fee. A brand's own store (see the Shopify expert guide) builds a direct relationship, repeat purchases and full margin control. Most serious product brands run both channels in parallel rather than choosing one.
Amazon listing optimization and normal eCommerce SEO share the same underlying skill — understanding buyer search language and structuring content around it. The same discipline used for 120+ eCommerce stores built and optimised (see the eCommerce cost guide and portfolio) applies directly to Amazon listing copy, backend keywords and PPC targeting.
Seller Central account setup, product listing creation and optimization (titles, bullet points, backend keywords, A+ content), inventory and pricing management, PPC advertising campaigns, review/rating monitoring, and account health management to avoid suspensions.
Amazon and an independent website (Shopify or custom) serve different buyer intents — Amazon captures ready-to-buy marketplace search traffic, while a brand site builds direct customer relationships and repeat purchases. Most product brands benefit from running both in parallel.
The most common causes are weak backend search terms, thin bullet points that do not match buyer search language, poor-quality images, low review count or rating, and pricing/inventory issues that hurt the Buy Box — all fixable with a proper listing audit.
