SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What's the Difference in 2026?

Three acronyms, three different places your customer might find you: a Google results page, a Google AI Overview or featured snippet, and a ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini answer. Each needs slightly different work, and confusing them wastes effort. Here's the plain-language version.

SEO — Search Engine Optimization

The original discipline: getting a webpage to rank in the traditional "blue link" results on Google. It rests on three pillars — technical health (fast, crawlable, mobile-friendly, correct HTML structure), content relevance (does the page genuinely answer what the searcher wants), and authority (backlinks and reputation signals telling Google the site can be trusted). SEO is slow to build and slow to lose — it compounds over months, not days.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

AEO targets a narrower goal: getting a chunk of your content pulled out and shown directly as "the answer" — in a featured snippet, a Google AI Overview, or a voice-assistant response. This rewards content written in clear question-and-answer form, short direct definitions near the top of a section, and structured data like FAQPage schema (which is why you'll see FAQ schema used throughout this site). AEO is really a refinement of good SEO content practice, not a separate technology.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

GEO is newer and distinct: it's about being cited or recommended when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini a question, rather than typing into Google at all. These tools don't rank pages the way Google does — they synthesize an answer from whatever sources they trust and can access. That makes GEO less about keyword placement and more about being a clear, well-structured, frequently-referenced source: consistent facts about your business across the web, a llms.txt file describing your site to AI crawlers, explicit entity data (schema.org markup, a clear "who is this" answer), and being mentioned/linked from other credible sites the AI models already trust.

How they work together

In practice these aren't three separate projects — they share a foundation: clean site structure, genuinely useful content, and real credibility signals (real backlinks, consistent business information, structured data). The split matters mainly for how you prioritize and measure: SEO shows up in Search Console rankings and organic traffic, AEO shows up in featured-snippet/AI-Overview appearances, and GEO shows up as citations or mentions when you test your own brand and services against ChatGPT/Perplexity directly.

What this looks like in practice

On client sites this usually means: schema.org markup (Person/Organization/FAQPage/Article/BreadcrumbList) on every page, a llms.txt file for AI crawlers, genuinely useful FAQ sections instead of keyword-stuffed ones, fast core web vitals, and — the part most sites skip — actually earning backlinks and mentions instead of relying on the content alone. See the services page for how this is applied, or the portfolio for real examples across dental, eCommerce and EdTech sites.

FAQ

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — structuring content so it can be directly extracted as an answer, for example in Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, or voice assistant responses.

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — optimizing so that generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini cite or recommend your business when a user asks a related question.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Traditional Google search still drives the majority of traffic for most businesses in 2026. GEO is additive — it targets a growing but still smaller slice of discovery happening through AI chat tools, and the two share a lot of the same foundations (clear structure, real content, credible sources).
